Brenda Mengurr Wunungmurra

Mengurr Is from the Dalwangu clan based at Gangan. Her father, Gandalal, was a respected leader and he ‘found’ Wunduru Murrinyina from the Darrawark clan and had children with her. They were living at Bayguurtji another homeland near Gapuwiyak, before Gapuwiyak was established. Baygurrtji has plenty of Crocodiles in the river there. Gandalal and his brothers were harvesting Crocodile skins to sell to Harold Sheperdson, who used to fly in a small plane to many of the homelands around Gapuwiyak and exchange the skins for food and tobacco etc. Mengurr was born there at Baygurrtji and thats how she got her nickname Baru (Crocodile). Baru’s mother taught her all about Fibre art and how to make the finely coloured and twined mats that she is famous for. The family moved to Gapuwiyak where she established her own family. Baru’s husband Wapit Mununggurr and son Mirriny are good artists as well. There is a songline that starts in Gangan about the Wurran (Australian Darter). The songline travels to Gapuwiyak where Wurran created the lake. This songline connects the Dhalwangu with the Gupapuyngu who are Traditional owners of Gapuwiyak.
