Stingray are a tasty food source for Yolŋu. When the yellow flowers of the wattle trees start to appear, people start to prepare their hunting spears to go and hunt stingray. As the season starts to become dry stingrays will be fat and good to eat. Marrandjalk is one of the words used for stingray. Yirritja clans like Gumatj and Madarrpa have songlines about the Stingray that tell of birthplaces, fights and travels.
