The Gangurri or Long yam is a favourite food in East Arnhem land. It is ready to be dug up at the end of the dry season. The yam sends out a long vine-like tendril with beautiful heart shaped leaves. Once these leaves dry up the tendrils are traced back to where they emerge from the ground and then the delicate potato like tubers are dug up. Gangurri feature in songlines and the collecting actions are danced during ceremony.
