Bilma (Clapsticks)

Bilma are shaped out of hardwood like Maypin (Ironbark). The best bilma resonate with a powerful ‘clack’. Generally one stick is larger, and a smaller stick is used to strike the larger one. Bilma are used as a way to call and sing for the people, land and animals. During ceremony dancing and singing to the Bilma beat is an integral part of the stories that are performed.
